Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) is working to redevelop its vacant site at Crown Street, Wollongong, into a modern mixed-tenure project that seamlessly integrates into the central business district of Wollongong.
The social housing dwellings on site formerly comprised of three 1950’s three-storey apartment buildings, which were well past their working life and were recently demolished by LAHC in late 2019.
Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey announced on 20 May 2020 (link to media release) that Traders in Purple had been appointed by LAHC to redevelop the site, following a competitive tender process. The social housing units will be managed by Housing Trust and will blend in with the private and affordable rental housing.
The project will deliver around 62 mixed-tenure apartments, of which 18 tenancies will be allocated for social housing purposes and 6 apartments will be affordable.
Following a development application approval process through Wollongong City Council, LAHC anticipates construction works to commence on the site in early 2022 and take about 18 months to complete.
