The NSW Government has announced the successful tenderer for Ivanhoe Estate, the biggest social and affordable housing renewal development in Australia and the first of five major sites delivered under the $22 billion Communities Plus program.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Minister for Social Housing Pru Goward and Member for Ryde Victor Dominello today congratulated the successful tenderer - Aspire consortium - which includes Frasers Property Australia, Citta Property Group and Mission Australia Housing.
Ms Berejiklian said the redevelopment will transform the estate into a neighbourhood of 3000 units, including at least 950 social housing units and 128 affordable rental units. “The Ivanhoe project is a leading example of Government working with the private sector to deliver a sustainable redevelopment for local communities, close to jobs, education, health services, transport and other amenities,”Ms Berejiklian said.
“The redevelopment will provide $120 million towards social and community infrastructure and $21 million towards social housing programs within the Ivanhoe estate. This will see services including tailored and personal plans to connect social housing tenants with education, training and employment.”
Ms Goward said the project will be delivered in stages over 10 to 12 years, with work expected to start in late 2017. The first stage will include 259 new social housing units and is expected to be completed three years after development approval.
“This is the first major project to be delivered under the Communities Plus $22 billion building program, delivering more social and affordable housing,” Ms Goward said.
“At Ivanhoe, social housing dwellings will increase by more than three-fold – from 259 social to 950 social and 128 affordable units,” she said.
“Through communities like Ivanhoe, the NSW Government will help residents break the cycle of disadvantage by providing tailored and co-ordinated support so they can move toward housing independence.”
“This is great news for those who are in need of social and affordable housing. The redevelopment plan also includes a new high school, residential aged care and new child care centres, which will be welcomed by families,” Mr Dominello said.
Mission Australia CEO Catherine Yeomans said: “Everyone deserves a safe place to call home and everyone who lives in the Ivanhoe community will have the opportunity to fulfil their potential and connect with people in the neighbourhood, as well as having easy access to education, transport, jobs and services in the area.
”Frasers Property Australia CEO Rod Fehring said Ivanhoe will blend best practice urban design, iconic architecture and world-leading sustainability to transform this public asset into a world-class residential neighbourhood.
“With a focus on design and a holistic approach to environmental and social sustainability, Ivanhoe will be a flagship project for NSW, demonstrating how the government and private sectors can work together to deliver necessary social and affordable housing by taking a true long term community view,” Mr Fehring said.
The Communities Plus program will deliver up to 23,500 new and replacement social and affordable housing dwellings, and up to 40,000 private homes over the next 10 years. Other major sites include Waterloo, Arncliffe, Telopea and Riverwood.
