Momentum continues to build on a visionary inner Sydney housing redevelopment that will deliver 74 new social and private homes in Glebe.
The NSW Government has awarded long-term management rights for the 35 social housing units in the $32 million project to community housing provider (CHP) Bridge Housing, following a competitive tender process run by the NSW Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC).
NSW Land and Housing Corporation Chief Executive, Michael Cassel, said the outcome affirmed the ongoing and successful partnership between the government and the community housing sector to deliver and manage contemporary new social housing across the state.
“This landmark development at Cowper Street and Wentworth Park Road is a great example of how the NSW Government is working to deliver new and better social housing in inner Sydney, that also enhances the unique character of the local area,” Mr Cassel said.
“Not only will it help to revitalise housing stock in Glebe, the project will almost double the number of existing social housing dwellings on site, and increase LAHC’s ability to provide more fit-for-purpose homes to those who need them most.
“Delivery of the project will also provide a timely boost to the local economy and support more families and businesses, with about 160 jobs supported during the construction phase.”
Inspired by historic brick woolstore buildings and Glebe’s iconic Victorian terraces, the project was designed by award-winning Sydney architectural firm Johnson Pilton Walker.
The Prince’s Trust Australia is also providing design advisory services, particularly in relation to using traditional architecture and embedding sustainability into the buildings.
Bridge Housing CEO, John Niccolades, said the Cowper Street development would provide a secure, affordable home for 35 households in need.

The project is currently under review by the City of Sydney. If the planning controls are supported, a development application will need to be lodged and approved before the project starts construction.
This development is part of the NSW Government’s Future Directions for Social Housing – a plan to deliver more and better social housing that blends in with local communities.
